No human remains have been found, at the site of the former Ballarat Orphanage with police now finished at the site. Investigators have spent the past week excavating the site relating to an allegation bodies may have been buried there prior to its closure in 1968. However, no human remains have been found no further police activity will occur at the site and investigation is no considered complete. 17th of April 2015.The Ballarat Courier It's been a long heart aching week which has effected so many people especially past residents and their families. Victoria Police has begun a search for children's remains at the old Ballarat Orphanage site. A forensic team started on Tuesday and will return to work on Wednesday. In a statement released on Tuesday, Victoria Police said the investigation had sprung out of an allegation about the orphanage burying children on the Victoria street site before its closure in 1968. "Victoria Police has received information that children may have been buried on the grounds of the former Ballarat Orphanage," the statement said. "(We are) liaising closely with The Coroners Court, the Victorian Institute of Forensic Medicine and the government to investigate this allegation." The possibility of children being buried at the old orphanage was first publicly raised in 2013, when two former residents sisters told Ballarat City Council during the development process for the site, which was sold in 2011.
